Air Pollution Effects Research

The following highlights a sampling of air pollution research projects E&S Environmental Chemistry has conducted:
  • E&S staff played key roles in EPA’s Aquatic Effects Research Program (AERP), a ten-year research effort that focused on the acid-base status of lakes and streams throughout the country.

  • E&S staff have published over 50 journal articles, books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed technical reports on air pollution effects.

  • E&S has completed four regional Air Quality Reviews for the National Park Service: Pacific Northwest, California, Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Regions, and for Shenandoah National Park.

  • E&S staff authored aquatic portions of the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) Reports to Congress for 1991 and 1998.

  • E&S conducted a regional model-based assessment of air pollution effects on streams and forest soils throughout the Southern Appalachian Mountains (eight state) region on behalf of the Southern Appalachian Mountains Initiative (SAMI), a multi-stakeholder group of industry, environmental organizations, and state and federal agencies.

  • E&S has constructed model projections of lake and stream acidification in response to sulfur and nitrogen inputs in the northeastern United States, Appalachian Mountains, Cascade Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, Florida, Norway, Wales, Netherlands, and Sweden.

The following are some of E&S's air pollution effects clients:

  • National Park Service

  • National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

  • USDA Forest Service

  • Tennessee Valley Authority

  • Battelle-Pacific Northwest Laboratory

  • U.S. Department of Energy

  • Argonne National Laboratory
